Diversity Award: Chantel Johnson ‘23 (Vol. 111)
The annual Diversity Award goes to the member who has embodied and exemplified our diversity initiatives and goals. This year, the award is presented to Chantel Johnson.
Chantel’s personal and academic interests relate to criminal law. During law school, Chantel participated in the Clean Slate Clinic at the East Bay Community Law Center, an internship at the Federal Public Defenders in Oakland, and the Death Penalty Clinic. She also served as a co-leader of the SLP “Police Review Project,” a Research Assistant to Professor Russell Robinson, and the Senior Development Editor of the California Law Review (Vol. 111). After law school, she will work as a litigation associate in San Francisco. Chantel holds a BA in Political Science from UNC Chapel Hill, and a minor in Philosophy.
As Senior Development Editor, Chantel committed to making write-on accessible to all students, especially first-generation students of color. Her efforts made a process that can be extremely intimidating feel welcoming. One of the many students who nominated Chantel for this award said: she “single-handedly changed my view on whether I was capable of doing CLR.”
